Mark Silverthorn focuses on providing advice, both practical and legal, to consumers dealing with debt collectors, where permitted by law in a particular jurisdiction.
Mark Silverthorn has significant experience in the collection industry from his work on behalf of collection agencies operating in the U.S. and Canada. Between 1994 and 2006, Mark Silverthorn spent about 15,000 hours assisting collection agencies in the recovery of millions of dollars from consumers. Mark Silverthorn is now using this knowledge as a former collection lawyer and collection industry insider to help consumers avoid paying debts collection agencies claim are owing.
In the late 1990s, the American Collectors Association International (ACA International), an industry association representing collection agencies worldwide, began referring callers with questions regarding collections to Mark Silverthorn. From 2001 to 2006, Mark Silverthorn served as the Chair for Canada of the ACA International's Member Attorney Program, a group comprised of lawyers working on behalf of collection agencies. Mark Silverthorn also had access to a significant number of publications available to ACA members. In 2005 Mark Silverthorn gave a presentation at the American Collectors Association International’s Annual Meeting.
Mark Silverthorn attended school at Graceland College in Iowa. He later obtained his law degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1982. He was called to the bar in the Province of Ontario in 1985, and was called to the New York state bar in 1997. In the mid-1980s, he served as a political aide to Ontario Attorney-General Roy McMurtry. He subsequently worked as a lobbyist and as a senior executive of a national industry association. In the early 1990s, he practiced criminal law in Toronto, Ontario.
